Being an Indian Woman in Australia: Negotiating with Culture, Family Violence and Finding More Knowledgeable Others

thesis
posted on 2024-09-18, 06:36 authored by Amar Freya
This qualitative study explored how a group of Indian Australian women understood and articulated their experiences of family violence, and how they sought help through formal and informal More Knowledgeable Others (MKOs). The participants were six Indian Australian women and eight MKOs. The data were analysed thematically. Employing a multifaceted theoretical framework highlighted the diverse, complex and intersecting identities of my participants. I contributed to understandings of how migrant women from India negotiated their cultural identities in Australia. My study offers indicative findings that support understandings of family violence within the Indian Australian and other communities.
