This PhD project investigated the challenges and facilitators to the large-scale implementation of programs targeting hypertension and diabetes in vulnerable populations. There are three major findings. First, building and maintaining trustworthy relationships provide the foundation for successfully implementing programs. Second, although analytical skills and research expertise of investigators are important, interpersonal skills, such as communication and leadership, are essential for engaging with partners external to the research team. Third, while partners are encouraged to contribute to the development of such programs to address their needs effectively, meaningful contribution requires establishing a culture of respect and equity across all partners.
