Analytics of Communicative Patterns in Educational Feedback

This PhD thesis explored communicative patterns in educational feedback which is an effective method for supporting learners' academic performance. The thesis proposed state-of-the-art algorithms to investigate communicative patterns in online human-human tutoring dialogues and written feedback. The thesis identified effective communicative patterns involving the expression of politeness and delivery of instructional strategies in the online tutoring dialogues, proposed and evaluated the methods to improve the automated analysis of online tutoring dialogues, and proposed a novel method for automatic analysis of the quality of written feedback. Overall, this PhD thesis contributed to the understanding of effective communication in educational feedback and provided insights for improving feedback practices.
