An informed approach to performance practice issues in Lipstick (1998) - by Jacob ter Veldhuis

Lipstick for amplified flute/alto flute and tape (1998) by Jacob ter Veldhuis (b. 1951) is a work for flute and soundtrack - composed around fragments of speech samples drawn from American popular culture. The score to Lipstick is problematic as it merely provides the notes and approximate rhythms, with minimal expressive instructions to the flautist. Furthermore, the recorded accompaniment is fixed and therefore raises questions about developing expression against a static accompaniment. Via performance-based research and interviews with Eleonore Pameijer, Connie Frigo and Jacob ter Veldhuis, this thesis addresses these problems through a detailed examination of rhythm and phrasing in Lipstick.
