Swaziland has the highest prevalence of HIV in the world, which has resisted international aid efforts. This project explored the structure and dynamics of the epidemic in search of alternative action strategies. Following a critical review of extant theoretical frameworks an empirical study was undertaken of the experiences of rural Gogos (grandmothers), migrant labourers and female sex workers. In response to the complexity of these data a post-structural conceptual model predicated on ontological multiplicity and rhizomatic dynamism was proposed. This framework suggests multiple opportunities for intervention that may contribute to transforming the healthcare systems of Swaziland and other postcolonial societies.
