An Actor-Network Theory (ANT) investigation of young children’s engagement and learning with digital technologies at home and preschool

This research investigated 3-5-year-old children’s use of digital technologies in the preschool and home settings, and explored their learning possibilities with digital technologies by adopting a posthumanist perspective, specifically Actor-Network Theory (ANT) (Latour, 2005). The findings indicated that young children’s use and learning with technologies is not an autonomous aspect. In fact, it is mediated by number of other agencies. Digital devices were found to play multiple roles for young children such as a source of learning, entertainment and relaxation. It appeared that children’s digital practices do not supplant but complement their traditional activities.
