Advancing the understanding of opioid receptor biology and function in the enteric nervous system

Opioids have been used for centuries for their analgesic and antidiarrheal properties. However, their use can be severely limited by side-effects including constipation. This thesis examined novel concepts of how opioids regulate gut function. It identified potential approaches through which opioid therapeutics with reduced gastrointestinal side-effects may be developed.
