Advancement of current intelligent compaction technology for asphalt pavement layers

As the necessity of real-time feedback control for the vibratory roller during asphalt compaction increases, the use of intelligent compaction (IC) is being considered for asphalt pavement construction around the world. IC provides real-time feedback to the roller operator by displaying colour-coded maps of various intelligent compaction measurement values (ICMVs). Although many field demonstration projects were undertaken in the past two decades, an acceptable correlation between asphalt density and ICMVs was not achieved. Therefore, this study aims to advance the current IC technology for asphalt to maximise its benefits for quality assurance and quality control (QA/QC) of asphalt compaction.
