This thesis highlights the advantages of gas chromatography (GC) combined with mass spectrometry (MS) and molecular spectroscopic detection techniques – Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy in particular. The hyphenated GC–FTIR approach is adopted to emphasise the complementary powers of MS and FTIR to render an unambiguous identification of chemical components. Further, high-resolution GC (by GC×GC–TOFMS) and high-resolution MS (HRMS) techniques are applied to complex matrix analysis using aviation fuel. The various advanced analytical approaches are visited to place each technique in its rightful place in the greater aspiration of accurate component identification.
