Myocardial infarction (MI) is a leading cause of morbidity and death globally. Activation of a protein family known as the 'adenosine receptors' have been reported to be potentially beneficial in improving clinical outcomes for patients with MI. This thesis explores how drugs acting on adenosine receptors exert their cardioprotective effects and how this is altered in different disease states using both in vitro and in vivo models.
