Address Terms in academic email communication: A study of student-to-academic staff emails in Australia

The thesis reports on a study of the use and perception(s) of the choice of address terms in student-to-academic staff email communication. The results revealed that the choice of address terms by students use in their email correspondence is influenced by a relatively wide range of factors and variables, including cultural conceptualisations, identity, (perceived) social distance, age, gender, religion, channel of communication, and email speech act. The innovative aspects of the study includes it’s a) methodology (email data, interview, and conceptual analysis), analytical framework (cultural conceptualisations and language), and setting (multicultural academia).
