Across the Boundaries: Unity and Disunity in an Elite School in Cyprus

thesis
posted on 2022-02-16, 22:31 authored by MATTHEW KRAIG SHAW
The Lefkos Academy (TLA) educates students from the Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot communities despite social and cultural division that exists within the wider Cypriot society. This study employs research approaches from global history and ethnography to consider contemporary contradictions. It explores boundaries that exist and the problems that they cause at the school. Specific attention is given to absences and boundaries, which support central arguments on the persistence of history in everyday life in Cyprus, TLA as a microcosm of Cypriot society, the limits of sporting idealism, and the presence of absences and silences in intra-school and macro-political processes.
