Additive manufactured (or 3D printed) materials suffer from internal defects due to their production procedures. To ensure the safety of additive manufactured components, proper structural health monitoring methods are needed. This thesis shows the feasibility of acoustic emission testing in monitoring internal defects of additive manufactured components and studies waveform related features of collected activities. It also provides a deeper understanding of acoustic emission sources from pencil lead break signals and fatigue crack progressions.
