This thesis explores the functionality of English by Chinese working professionals in two cities, Kunming and Beijing, of China. Using surveys, semi-structured interviews, and focus group interviews, it investigates how English functions in relevant circumstances and contexts, and identifies sociocultural factors contributing to those functions. Findings show that Chinese working professionals use English to varying degrees in personal and professional contexts, and that the functions of English are expanding. More localized functions of English have emerged as Chinese working professionals become more aware of the functionality. It provides insight into understanding intercultural and intracultural communication involving Chinese speakers of English.
