This research explores how a dodecaphonic compositional system called hexachordal combinatoriality (HC) can be used to compose music for a jazz big band. To undertake this research, I used HC to create an original multi-movement composition, Cosmica Sidera, for a jazz big band. The analysis of this composition found that HC readily incorporated common jazz features like walking bass lines and improvisations and provide shorthand ways of communicating what pitches were required to execute these; analysis also found that HC was flexible in providing both melodic and harmonic material usable in jazz big band composition.
