This minor thesis was compiled to a brief from the Australian Heritage Commission. The Commission needed a chronological historical summary of defence in Victoria from which significant themes could be developed. As well, it needed a comprehensive inventory of all defence places in Victoria with their relationships to those themes. There were two reasons for this.
