This thesis employed a mixed methods approach aiming to understand the relationship between perceived family resilience and adolescent mental health symptomatology (depression, anxiety, and stress symptoms) among Malaysian families. Parent-teenager dyads were surveyed for the first phase, followed by interviews with selected teenagers who reported either higher or lower perceived family resilience. It was identified that family connection and family obligation were important protective factors in the family resilience process, in the Malaysian context. Through a synthesis of the findings, recommendations for including the local cultural context in understanding family resilience was proposed for Malaysian family researchers and clinical practitioners.
