A Grammar of Wik-Mungkan

Wik-Mungkan, spoken in and around Aurukun, Cape York, Far North Queensland, is one of the few remaining Indigenous languages spoken in Australia. This thesis describes this language in detail so that knowledge of the language is accessible. It is based on a range of resources, including historical oral recordings of traditional and contemporary narratives, prior linguistic analysis and recent conversations with the elders and keepers of the language in Aurukun. These resources are used to describe the structure and particular capabilities of Wik-Mungkan, including comparing and contrasting with other Indigenous languages of Cape York and beyond.
