Metal additive manufacturing (or 3D printing) is a technology for printing complex parts for the biomedical and aerospace industry. Currently, it is employed only in niche applications, and wider adoption of this technology is challenged by both high cost and quality assurance issues. However, with the rise of digital technologies and artificial intelligence, new solutions are emerging. This thesis explores how digital twin technology can improve the complex 3D printing process and manufacture parts that are cheaper to make, more reliable, and stronger.
