Cancer has classically been regarded as a disease of gene expression, whereby information from DNA, namely RNA, is used to synthesise a functional gene product such as protein. Recent evidence has highlighted that proteins involved in transport of RNA are systematically altered in a variety of cancers but the picture is far from complete. I have discovered a completely new RNA checkpoint that regulates the transport of damaged RNA. Characterisation of this novel pathway will provide new information on how cells respond to stress and how this contributes to the development and progression of cancer.
