YourGround New South Wales, Baseline Insights Report.

YourGround was a crowdsourced social research project that captured the safety perceptions of women and gender diverse people who sharied their public space experiences through a web-based interactive map and survey. The report covers the findings of the survey including noting that perceptions of safety are influenced by a wide range of environmental and social factors. Women’s sense of safety in public spaces is also strongly impacted by the real and perceived threat of men’s violence. The study also found that addressing women’s safety concerns in public spaces is not straightforward and demands holistic, nuanced, and gender-sensitive strategies. The survey participants emphasised the significance of feeling comfortable occupying a space. Improving physical conditions in order to attract people to use and occupy a location is critical.
