<p dir="ltr">This report shares the findings from a research project that aimed to increase public trust in genomic technologies, including this procedure, by examining its social, ethical and legal aspects. This project, which ran from 2020 to 2023, was funded by the Australian Department of Health and Aged Care, MRFF 76744. </p><p dir="ltr">Our findings suggest that the legalisation and potential implementation of mitochondrial donation in Australia is consistent with the predominant views of experts and the broader public. However, ethical, legal and social questions remain, and the potential implementation of mitochondrial donation highlights existing weaknesses in the Australian healthcare system, especially at the intersection of the fertility and genomics sectors. </p>
