Out on the Fields is the largest (N = 9494) and the first international study (six countries) conducted into homophobia in sport. It was released in May, 2015.
The research was led by Erik Denison and Alistair Kitchen with data collection done by Nielsen Sport. The study was commissioned by Bingham Cup 2014, Sydney Convicts, and Sport Australia.
About the study
It is also the first to take an in-depth look at the experiences of gay, lesbian and bisexual (LGB) people, including athletes, in sporting culture. The study included trans and gender diverse participants, but the focus was on sexual minorities and gathered data on levels of participation, discrimination, victimisation, as well as the perceptions of safety, acceptance, and inclusion.
