Fluorinated propellants used in asthma inhalers have global warming potential in excess of 1400 kg CO2 equivalent. Hence, these propellants must be replaced with low-global warming potential alternatives for environmental and economic reasons. These new low-global warming potential propellants have different physico-chemical properites. Also the fluid-mechanical behaviour and drug-particle interaction is not fully investigated. Therefore, we are undertaking fundamental research to enable the transition to new alternative propellants for inhalers.
