Integration of Mental Health Literacy Content for Children of Parents with a Mental Illness in Programs: Thematic Analysis of a Literature Review to inform, evidence based practices and intervention
Most children have low levels of mental health literacy (MHL), meaning some do not have access to or an understanding of accurate, non-stigmatized information. It can be challenging to know what kind of MHL content should be delivered. The aim is to provide the knowledge content needed to increase MHL of children. Findings reveal that children’s MHL needs consist of knowledge of mental illness and recovery; stigma; resilience strategies; help-seeking; identifying mental illness risk factors. Child MHL scales should include mental illness identification, stigma, help-seeking, providing help, and self-care.
