The effective management of the supply chain has been identified as of significant importance to achieving and sustaining a competitive advantage for firms in the Australian textiles, clothing and footwear industry (TCF). The Australian Government introduced a program targeted at enhancing the competitiveness of TCF industry through effective supply chain management (SCM). The program was specifically created for small to medium sized companies and implemented in 50 companies in Victoria over the period 1996-2000. The paper presents the findings from the first phase of a research project aiming at evaluating the performance of companies involved in the government-funded SCM program. The first phase involved interviews with managers from selected enterprises whilst the second phase will involve a questionnaire survey. Interviews were conducted with managers directly involved with SCM initiative, including Managing Directors, Operations and Purchasing Managers and Finance Managers. In-depth examination of the performance changes points to firms that are developing new relationships with their suppliers and customers with the support of e-commerce technology. However, results also point out that some firms had not been integrated in SCM program effectively and failed to achieve a competitive advantage.
