This article examines the impact of the Coalition Government’s proposed increase in the private hospital insurance rebate for people aged 65 and over. It concludes that the increased rebate is only likely to benefit those already insured. Most people aged 65+ who are not insured are drawn from the ranks of the less affluent. The rebate will do little to overcome the financial problems they face in affording private health cover.
