The resurgence of marvellous Melbourne revisited : trends in population distribution in Victoria, 1996 to 2001

Both Melbourne and regional Victoria’s populations are growing strongly. Both grew by more than one per cent in the year ending 30 June 2002. During the 1996 to 2001 period the population of Melbourne continued to grow faster than that of regional Victoria. The contribution of natural increase to population growth declined. However, both overseas migration and interstate migration contributed strongly to Victoria’s population growth. Rather than losing population to the other States and Territories, Victoria is now gaining population through interstate migration. However, based on 2001 Census data, regional Victoria lost population through interstate migration during the 1996 to 2001 period.
