This paper is the text of the Australia Day address delivered at the NSW Conservatorium of Music on the 23rd of January 2002. It examines what is distinctive about Australia’s evolutionary inheritance. It then explores the profound economic, demographic and cultural adjustments we Australians must make if we are to live sustainably here.
