Performance art has its genesis in the late 1950s. Although there are historical precedents in Futurism and Dada in the early twentieth-century, the performance art genre as we understand it today emerged within a general movement to democratise and dematerialise the arts. It was often asso-ciated with issue-based politics – feminism, ecological and anti-nuclear issues – and time-based and process art practised by some of the Conceptualists.
