Australian cities are suburban and many writers are critical of this. But the suburbs are not homogeneous: there are outer, middle and inner suburbs. When choosing a place to live in our cities, people tend to trade disadvantages off against advantage. Recent research shows that, contrary to some critics' views, most people are satisfied with their suburban lifestyle.
