Over the last 7 years that I have been teaching in Management Schools I've learned to combine rigour and relevance meaningfully by applying the concept of "enlightened" self-interest (McLean 1995). Enlightened self-interest is an extrapolated honest form of "Win-Win" in that the University wins and I win when operating in this paradigm. Combining rigour and relevance in this way provides a means for the Management School lecturer to publish as well as meaningfully engage with at least the business sector of the economy.
