Immigration and the surplus of doctors in Australia

Since the mid 1980s the number of overseas-trained doctors entering Australia as permanent residents or temporary residents has escalated. The Australian Government has sought to control this intake because it believes there is an oversupply of doctors especially in urban general practice. However, the Government's control measures have largely failed. As a consequence Australian medical schools have been told to cut their reenrolments, beginning in 1996. Copyright.
