Many authors and policy makers assume that girls and women are a disadvantaged group in education. This was once true. By the 1990s, however, female students had not only caught up with males; on a number of indicators they had surpassed them. This success in overcoming disadvantage in higher education should transfer to overcoming some of the barriers encountered by women In the workforce.
