Before the mid 1980s aggregate labour-force participation rates of migrants were higher than those of Australian-born people. They are now lower. Is this trend an artefact of differences in the age structure of the two populations? Christabel Young's analysis shows that it is not. The deterioration in the labour-force participation of migrants is real.
