<p>This is the first of three interviews for Special Issue of <i>Postdigital Science and Education</i>, ‘Education in the Automated Age’, This article presents a conversation with Professor Chris Gilliard - widely-regarded for his critiques of surveillance technology, digital privacy and the problematic ways that digital technologies intersect with race and social class. </p><p> </p><p>In this interview, Neil Selwyn talks with Chris about the automated forms of surveillance that have been integrated into schools and colleges over the past few years – from remote ‘online examination proctoring’ to ongoing enthusiasms for putting virtual assistants such as Amazon Echo and Alexa in classrooms. </p>
