The first stage of an ongoing analysis of the language data from the 2001 Census shows both a consolidation of tendencies established from previous censuses as well as indicators of further change. This is demonstrated particularly in the language use of the school-age population. Each capital city is now displaying its own characteristic ethno linguistic profile, and most states have also increased their proportion of speakers of languages other than English.
