Ethics, stakeholders and HRM: a review and conceptual analysis

This paper differentiates an ethical perspective of HRM from existing "mainstream" and critical perspectives of HRM. To date, ethical analysis of HRM has taken one of two forms: macro-analysis of HRM as a whole, and micro-level analysis of H RM practices. Macro-level analysis is criticised. Firstly, theoretical flaws are identified and the analysis is further developed. Secondly, the fact that such ethical analysis is outside the scope of the modem corporation is exposed. There is, however, a third way in which ethics may be applied to HRM. Ethical concerns are used as a basis to develop minimum standards against which HRM may be evaluated. Yet, even when judged by these standards HRM is seriously lacking. This begs the question, not of whether HRM is ethical, but of whether HRM can be ethical.
