'A political statement, whether you understand that or not': Inclusive Gender Expression in Avatar Customization

This research explores inclusive gender expression in avatar customization. Employing semi-structured interviews with gender diverse and cisgender players, the study identifies themes of subverting gender norms, symbolizing self-identity, and experimenting with gender. The presentation aims to deepen understanding of systemic gender norms in games and suggest directions for more inclusive design.
