For bass clarinet, Music in Motion hardware and modular synthesiser.
Cat Hope for and with Robert Ek (2023)
The score is proportional, and read vertically (lowest pitches on the right, highest on the left). The lowest note written for the clarinet should be as low as possible on the instrument; the lowest notes on the synthesiser should be on the cusp of human hearing. The motion of the clarinetist should control the modular frequency via their movement. The envelope is described by the range of green shapes. They dynamic is a consistently medium soft, with entries and exits starting and ending at nothing.
The score should be read in the Decibel ScorePlayer application on an iPad. The modular should be run through 2 x subwoofer speakers, one for each part.
Program Note
This piece explores the ways bass clarinet and modular synthesis interact timbrally, using movement as a way to blend them choreographically as well as sonically.
