This is a composition by Cat Hope for two double basses and two sine tone generators, completed in October 2024.
Dedicated to Chloe Sobek and Helen Svoboda.
INSTRUCTIONS
The score is proportional, with the highest point of the vertical axis being the highest pitch reference, the bottom being the lowest pitch reference. The score should be read in the Decibel ScorePlayer application. Line thickness indicates dynamic unless indicated otherwise. There are two versoins of the peice - one [Zal.dsz] for two double bassists and 2 sine tone generator performers, and another which has a performance of the sine tone generators embedded in it [Zalwsine.dsz] enabling performance by only two double bassists if required. There is also a version of the piece for 4 modulars, performed by Cat Hope and Juan Parra Cancino, recorded at the Orpheus Institute in November 2024.
PROGRAM NOTE
According to Franz Liszt, Frederic Chopin described his own music as imbued with ‘Zal’: a Polish word that does not translate easily into English: but describes a mix of melancholy, regret, grief, sorry rancour and menace. This piece is an attempt to describe this sensation in a piece of my own music, and consists of music 'figures' that draw from Chopin's own music, but also some designs in the cathedral where Chopin's heart is preserved.
