Understanding the associations between coal mine fire smoke and public health

thesis
posted on 2020-03-09, 02:30 authored by AMANDA LOUISE JOHNSON
This thesis examines associations between coal mine fire smoke particulate matter exposure and public health, using the 2014 coal mine fire near Morwell in the Latrobe Valley, Australia, as a case study. I found some evidence of associations between smoke exposure and increased respiratory symptoms 2.5 years later, among adult residents of Morwell. I also found increased utilisation of medical services and prescription medication dispensing during the fire among the broader Latrobe Valley population. The findings indicate that adverse health effects were associated with coal mine fire smoke exposure and risk mitigation policies should be developed for future events.
