Social entrepreneurship is an emerging phenomenon recognised for tackling complex social and environmental problems with focus on improving human wellbeing, social justice and sustainability. This thesis examines this emerging social phenomenon within the case context of transforming urban sanitation practices in Indonesia through eight case studies. The study engaged eight social entrepreneurs and 40 research participants in interviews to understand what, why and how social entrepreneurs create transformative change and develops an explanatory framework that outlines the phenomenon, roles, strategies and motivations of SE.
