Traces of the self in digital tracking practices
thesis
posted on 2020-01-21, 06:21 authored by BENJAMIN JOHN LYALLSelf-tracking devices like Fitbits and smartwatches are an increasingly common part of everyday life. However, these devices exist at the intersection of complex links between people, technology, social norms, health and corporations. Using novel mixed-method approaches, this thesis develops an understanding of how people interact, react and create new stories with visual presentations of their daily activities. Digital self-tracking tools are now normalised, and are in the process of altering social relations in both expected and unexpected ways.
