This research report investigates the use of double-stops in creating and enhancing character in Hindemith's viola concerto 'Der Schwanendreher'. Discussion of the interpretive inspiration offered by folk song lyrics and other non-musical elements within the piece, combined with comparison of two existing recordings, aids in the development of a performance reflecting the diverse characters of the piece.
