This thesis investigates the influence of the NF-kappaB transcription factors in a subset of CD8+ T cells, termed virtual memory cells. Virtual memory cells are T cells that have become activated and acquired enhanced immune functions through mechanisms that normally act to maintain homeostasis of the immune system. NF-kappaB transcription factors are a collection of proteins that function to turn on and off genes. This investigation shows that a member of the NF-kappaB family, RelA, plays an important role in regulating genes in virtual memory cells that are important for their development, function and homeostatic maintenance.
