This thesis provides mechanistic explanations of components of the aeroacoustic feedback loop present in impinging supersonic jets. Experimental techniques are used to examine the four processes of aeroacoustic resonance, but with a particular focus on the sound generation component. Two discrete tone generation mechanisms are identified, both associated with shock-vortex interaction processes.
