The Improvisational Etude: a Model for Creative Practice
thesis
posted on 2017-09-04, 23:51 authored by DANIEL FRANCIS SHEEHANThis research investigates the adaption and application of the classical piano etude as a tool for improvisational performance practice. The research outlines a five-stage model based on the composition, development and performance of improvisational etudes, incorporating reflection to better understand the processes involved in instrumental practice, and how new skills emerge in real-time performance. Presented in the form of composed scores, recorded performances and an exegesis, this research positions the improvisational etude model as a useful template for practitioners seeking to pursue idiosyncratic outcomes in their practice.
