Structuring Potentials: Sculpture as Apparatus

This exegesis investigates the capacity of sculpture to make imperceptible forces perceptible to an audience. Drawing on the philosophy of Gilbert Simondon and his notion of information as a structuring force that modifies or alters bodies in response to changing conditions, together with analysis of artworks by Aram Bartholl, Cameron Robbins and Joyce Hinterding, I identify complementary modes in which sculpture can produce awareness of subtle influences within a specific location. Interactions with the sculpture are framed as exchanges that shape bodies through an alteration of the positions and the perspectives of those encountering the artwork.
