This paper investigates and measures the presence of resistance to environmental management change, implementation of ISO 14000, in an Australian Dairy Manufacturing Company. A method of determining the type of resistance present, and the degree of knowledge and understanding of new environmental standards, was developed. After an organization wide survey, the information was analysed and conclusions were drawn as to the position of the organization as to its preparedness for the implementation of ISO 14000. This resulted in recommendations for specific training and management strategies so that resistance can be effectively utilised and managed ensuring successful implementation of these environmental management principles. Results indicate that provided correct techniques are applied, resistance will not impede the integration of environmental management programs but will, in fact, enhance it. Such a measuring tool would be advantageous for other organizations facing similar challenges.
